Reno and MacDonald tell the same story about the negative culture of. Return of the Strong Gods is sweeping yet concise—the ground Reno covers in just pages is impressive. But the book’s weaknesses are clear in part because of that very succinctness.

At other points he speaks of ‘guiding’ the return of the strong gods, which suggests that we are called to disciple the strong gods—and, of course, the life of discipleship begins with repentance. But if the strong gods are made to repent, are they still strong gods.
